Classrrom Library/ Reading Center:
Whole- Group Area:

One of the most important areas of my classroom will be my carpet. This area will be for morning meeting, group discussion, group activities, direct instruction, student presentations, student sharing, informal discussion, read-alouds, etc. Most importantly this will be the area where my class will come together as a whole. During these times, they should and will feel comfortable to share anything on their minds.

A classroom library should have a good variety of books ranging from low reading levels, to advanced reading levels, even a few years beyond the years of the grade you teach. You should never hold your students to low expectations. This area of the room should be comfortable, quiet and should be in a secluded part of the room in order for students to independently read or read quietly with a partner.

My teachers desk should be in a secluded area, with view of the entire room. This are of the classroom shouldn't be off limits to the students but should need permission to go into. I believe the students desk can be arranged in many different ways. I think it is important to try out differet variations in the beginning of the year. Thus far, i have found the most successful seating arrangement is the horshoe. Students have buddies on either side, outlines the whole-group area and students are able to keep focus on whats in front of them best.

This area is designated for small-group instruction such as reading groups, special seating during tests, peer-led discussions, and is also a great area for extra-help or assistance during certain work. This area is also useful for confrencing with students and even parents,

Classroom Setup

I believe classroom setup can dramatically affect students' attitudes toward and habits of learning. Students need an environment that is organized, stimulating, and comfortable in order to learn effectively. Creating such an environment entails arranging a practical physical layout, supplying diverse materials and supplies, and encouraging students to have a sense of belonging and ownership. Spending the past year as a substitute teacher, and getting the opportunity to spend my days in different classrooms, I have a very good idea of how I would like to set up my own classroom one day.

Here are some of the things my classroom will include. Pictures demonstrate ideas.
