Kappa Delta Pi/ATE Student Teacher of the Year 2013:

During my last student teaching experience at Lynwood Elementary School from January 2013-May 2013, I applied for the Kappa Delta Pi/ATE Student Teacher of the Year Award with the sponsorship of my Dowling College Supervisor Sandra Loughran.

In order to apply for this award, not only did I have to fill out the application and complete numerous essays but I was asked to submit a video-taped lesson plan. The lesson I submitted was on "Discrimination and The Power of Acceptance," with my third graders at Lynwood. This was a very tough but meaningful lesson, one that I'm sure my students won't ever forget.  I believe my students learned that their uniqueness is what makes them special. They learned that there have been times in the past, full of discrimination and that they are the future. They have the power to change the world.

I found out in August 2013 that I won this award. I was asked to attend the KDP 2013 Convocation in Dallas, Texas. There I was recognized and awarded a stipend of $1,200 and asked to speak.

Further, I was asked by the President of the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) to attend their conference in St.Louis in February 2014 to meet their committee.

I feel honored to have won an award from such a prestigious organization. I feel this award has not only confirmed I am on the right career path but I am eager to see what the future holds when I have a classroom of my own.
